Parents demand answers as hospital officials defend their nursing staff and equipment, saying the babies were seriously ill already.

After 13 newborns died at hospital in the western province of İzmir over the weekend, officials claimed no negligence as they launched an investigation yesterday.

Eleven taken into custody for Ergenekon investigation

Eleven people have been taken into custody in Ankara and Istanbul in connection with the Ergenekon investigation. Nurseli İdiz, Seyhan Soylu and Levent Temiz, who had threatened Hrant Dink, were among those taken into custody.

Eleven people have been taken into custody in operations conducted in connection with the Ergenekon investigation today. Some of those taken into custody are actress Nurseli İdiz, former president of Ülkü Ocakları (Hearths of the Ideal, an organization associated with the Grey Wolves) and lawyer Levent Temiz and Seyhan Soylu.

Another world is possible

The countdown has begun. The European Social Forum kicks off on September 17 at Malmö, Sweden, where more than 20 thousand participants from across the continent (and the globe) will meet with one clear thought in mind: another Europe is possible.

The forum, by far the biggest meeting place for social movements and progressive civil society in Europe, will, during the course of the five days hold more than 200 seminars and workshops which will be mixed with even more culture, film, music, informal meetings, activism and demonstrations. This year many trade unions will be in the forum.

DTP submits its oral defense

Ahmet Türk submited the oral defense for the Democratic Society Party and he said at the end that he was positive about the outcome of the case. Türk demanded that the European Human Rights Court and the Venice Criteria be taken into consideration.

I was talking with a friend of mine from Berlin. He said, "I become happy when I come to Turkey. There is excitement and chaos here. For instance, we don't know the names of any generals in Germany. Here, your spirit is being shaped according to every new general. Frankly, I envy you."

Apples on the other side of the wall are the sweetest! This is my friend's way of thinking, but I am thinking differently. I think we are not making any progress. We keep repeating the same old. For instance, the closure case filed against the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party, or DTP. If you ask me how many similar cases have been filed so far, I cannot give you a correct answer. All the parties formed by the Kurdish movement were shut down in the 1990s. Closure cases against political parties seem ordinary, routine developments.
