28 miners found dead

According to the Minister Yıldız, 28 of them found dead, 2 other miners are still missing and the rescue efforts are continuing at the mine at Karadon in the city of Zonguldak.

Early in the day Energy Minister of Turkey, Taner Yıldız declared that rescuers finally reached to the coalmine where 30 workers trapped after the fire damp explosion. According to the Minister, 28 of them found dead, 2 other miners are still missing and the rescue efforts are continuing at the mine at Karadon in the city of Zonguldak.

“All of the miners had died from suffocation” the Minister said to reporters. The explosion had taken place on Monday. Rescue works started immediately but the rescuers were unable to contact with any of the miners. After the minister’s announcement, family members of the dead miners burst into tears.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived at Zonguldak yesterday and made a public statement. “Fire damp explosions are a fate of this business” claimed the PM. He was protested by the family members of the miners and people from Karadon. He accused the protesters for being provocateurs. After the protests, police have arrested 2 of the protesters and 1 other get hurt.

Officers are still investigating if safety rules were violated which was a common factor in past mine accidents in the country. It was the third mine accident in Turkey in the past sixth months. The mining corporation at Karadon is affiliated with the Turkey Hard Coal Corporation. The corporation was working with subcontractor companies.
