Workplace occupation ended success at ÇEL-MER
The 23 workers who were laid off by the ÇEL-MER Steel Factory ended their workplace occupation with success. 12 workers will be back at their work on Monday and the employer will recognize the union.
23 Workers of the ÇEL-MER Steel Factory located at the Gebze township of Kocaeli. Province were laid off after joining Birleşik Metal-İş metal workers' union. After the negotiations between the company and the union led to an agreement, workers ended occupation by leaving the cranes.
Workers left the factory by chanting slogans like; "right to unionize can not be stopped", "we resist and win", "occupation, strike, resistance", "victory will be the resisting workers", and "UPS workers are not alone". Workers met with their families that were supporting them in front of the factory for days.
12 workers that were laid off after they joined the union were hired back soon. However, because they continued to organize in the factory, another 23 workers were laid off again. Workers resisted the employers by starting a workplace occupation that lasted about four days.
